This breathing exercise, the 'Smiling Breath' is based on cadence breathing, where you match the length of your inhale to the length of your exhale. |
Your nervous system is always working on detecting what is physically happening in your body. You can't cheat on your own brain, so let's establish a calming breathing rate first.
This
exercise also adds in some movement - as it's known that movement and nature are more helpful than talk therapy alone.
The arm movement here offers a stretch to the tissues that surround your ribcage and diaphragm. |
Gently encouraging some movement through the fascia that
surrounds your breathing system will allow for decompression, stimulate the vagus nerve, reduce tension. |
On top of that, we add in a moment of gratitude so this short practice has so much going for it. Do give it a try! |

This is a perfect morning practice, which feels uplifting and
balancing. It can also be performed seated. Bonus points if you can perform this out in nature and whilst facing a warming sunshine. |

I hope you grow to enjoy this exercise. |
