WEDNESDAY TIP OF THE DAY - TIPS TO STOP SUGAR CRAVINGS

Published: Wed, 01/25/17

Good morning,

Do you have toast in the morning with jam and found yourself wanting something sweet a few hours later? Do you find yourself looking for a bar of chocolate in the afternoon to help get you through the day?
The reason we crave sugary snacks is that eating simple carbohydrates can quickly satisfy hunger and give our body a short-term energy boost, but they almost as quickly leave us hungry again and craving more.

There is so much information around telling us it is sugar making us fat but we all have those days (including me) where we feel we need that quick fix.

Below are 5 ways to stop sugar cravings.  I hope the information below helps.

Have a good day.

Here are 5 ways to stop sugar cravings
Eat more protein. Make an effort to include more protein in your diet. Protein burns fat for fuel and keeps your insulin levels steady which leads to less cravings. Chris Quint, Health and Fitness Professional, Personal Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Coach, tells us “the first thing that you put into your mouth when you wake up in the morning will affect every single thing you do for the rest of the day.” Try starting the day with eggs or a protein shake. You’ll feel satisfied for a longer period and less likely to reach for a mid-morning sugary snack.
Get rid of temptation. If you don’t have easy access to simple sugars and sweets, you won’t be as likely to indulge. Avoid the sweets aisle at the market and walk away from the co-workers office that has the bowl of mini-chocolates. Instead, have healthy snacks ready for when the sugar cravings hit.
Switch to coconut oil. Coconut oil helps slow the absorption of sugar into the blood stream and also helps the absorption of energy into your cells. It improves insulin secretion and insulin utilisation.
Be aware of bad habits. We usually associate sweets with good things because they release serotonin in the brain, a feel good chemical that boosts our mood.. Become aware that you grab a chocolate bar when you’re having an afternoon slump or bad day. Decide to change that behaviour to something healthy, which then becomes a habit.
Try vitamins.
B Vitamins - help feed the adrenal gland, which assist in the body’s response to stress. Stress plays a strong role in driving sugar cravings especially as the adrenal gland becomes more fatigued.
Glutamine - stabilizes blood sugar, which helps to reduce cravings for sugar or something sweet. Glutamine also stimulates the release of glycogen to increase blood sugar to normal levels. You can take it in capsule form or dissolve it under your tongue for faster results.
Chromium - used to help the body maintain and balance blood sugar. Chromium may lower blood sugar, so diabetics who require insulin should monitor their blood sugar closely.
